Sie hat sich um Termine f\u00fcr die neuen Reisep\u00e4sse gek\u00fcmmert und vor einigen Wochen haben wir bereits die F\u00e4hre und das Hotel gebucht. Der gro\u00dfe Nachwuchs ist f\u00fcr ein Auslandstrimester mit einem Stipendium in Birmingham, mitten in England, und in den Herbstferien wollten wir ihn besuchen. In den mehr oder weniger regelm\u00e4\u00dfig stattfindenden Videotelefonaten merkten wir schon, dass es dort nicht soooo super ist und zudem war der Student vor den Herbstferien starkt erk\u00e4ltet. So sehr, dass er sogar an einem Tag nachts um halb zw\u00f6lf bei uns angerufen und um Rat gefragt hat. Dann muss es wirklich ernst sein. Den Nachmittag wollte ich zum Ausruhen nutzen und chillen. Vor allen Dingen, weil ich seit dem Vortag Migr\u00e4ne hatte und bereits eine Sumatriptan den Weg in den Kopf gefunden hatte. Dabei ist mir auch aufgefallen, dass nur noch drei Tabletten im Blister sind. War mir f\u00fcr eine Woche Urlaub mit eh schon schmerzendem Kopf zu wenig, so dass ich schnell die Rezepthotline bem\u00fcht habe und danach halbst\u00fcndlich in der Rezepte-App nachgesehen habe, ob das Teil schon da ist.<\/p>\n<p>Als ich nach dem Webinar im Wintergarten etwas ausruhen wollte, meldete sich der Nachwuchs und l\u00e4utete damit einen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.andreas-edler.de\/blog\/2024\/10\/stromausfall-mit-einigen-folgearbeiten\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nachmittag mit Basteleien<\/a> ein, der weder f\u00fcr meinen schmerzenden Kopf noch das Ausruhen hilfreich war! Verdammte Kacke! Die Tabletten konnte ich abe wenigstens am 18:30 Uhr in der Apotheke abholen und erledigte das, nach einem Besuch bei meiner Mama. Zumindest das hat geklappt. Viel sp\u00e4ter als geplant, sind wir gegen 21 Uhr ins Bett gegangen.<\/p>\n<h3>12.10.2024 &#8211; Hinfahrt und Ankunft<\/h3>\n<p>Mein Wecker klingelte um 2:45 Uhr. Da war Alex bereits schon 20 Minuten auf den Beinen und bereitete vor. Mein Kopf war halbwegs ruhig. Schnell abgeduscht und angezogen. Die restlichen Taschen in den gestern schon weitgehend gepackte Yeti geworfen und um kurz nach drei Uhr fuhren wir vom Hof. Nicht mit dem Elektroauto, weil wir f\u00fcr den Nachwuchs noch etlich Dinge nachliefern sollten. So zum Beispiel einen ganzen Rucksack voll Aufbackbr\u00f6tchen und Brot. Die Engl\u00e4nder k\u00f6nnen kein Brot backen, war der Hilferuf. Und zwei Paletten &#8222;Paulaner Spezi&#8220; als Notration befanden sich ebenfalls im Ladeabteil des tschechischen Kfz. Ich war offensichtlich noch ziemlich klitsch im Kopf, denn auf der Autobahnauffahrt bin ich eskaliert, weil ich mich wunderte, dass wir Richtung Dortmund und nicht Richtung Osnabr\u00fcck unterwegs waren. Ich hatte nur &#8222;Westen&#8220; im Kopf, nicht dass wir ja noch deutlich weiter s\u00fcdlich mussten. Und das, obwohl ich mir die Strecke mehrfach angeschaut habe. Auch wenn das Amundsen-Navi im Yeti langsam den Geist aufgibt. Das Display funktioniert nicht mehr \u00fcberall und einige Meldungen waren auch etwas merkw\u00fcrdig. Die best\u00e4ndig angesagten Sperrungen fanden gar nicht mehr statt und wir sind ohne jede Unterbrechung oder Stau durchgerauscht. Grenzkontrollen gab es nirgends und nach 45 Minuten durch die Niederlande waren wir pl\u00f6tzlich auch schon in Belgien. Dort haben wir getankt, weil Alex meinte es sei hier noch mal am G\u00fcnstigsten. Im Gegenteil, um kurz nach 10 Uhr waren wir in Calais vor dem Check-In. Ziemlich genau sieben Stunden, nachdem wir uns auf die Reise gemacht haben. Die Abwicklung an der F\u00e4hre war extrem effizient und gut organisiert. Wir sind praktisch nur durch gefahren. Keine 10 Minuten nachdem wir am Check-In waren, parkte der Yeti schon im Bauch der P&#038;O Ferry! Aussteigen und hoch ins Oberdeck. Dort hatten wir einen Platz mit Sicht nach vorne aus der F\u00e4hre auf&#8217;s Meer. Das Interieur ist deutlich in die Jahre gekommen, Polster teilweise aufgerissen, aber alles sauber. Die F\u00e4hre war recht leer und wahrscheinlich deshalb legten wir auch sofort ab. Wir haben einfach ein Schiff fr\u00fcher genommen. Ich musste nicht kotzen, aber es ging mir echt schlecht! Hatte nat\u00fcrlich in der Nacht auch keine der 5 \u00fcblichen Tabletten eingeworfen und sa\u00df wie ein Schluck Wasser in der Kurve. Knapp zwei Stunden dauerte die \u00dcberfahrt. Ich dachte wir w\u00e4ren noch mitten im Kanal, als Alex meinte, ich solle mich mal umdrehen. Da waren dort auch schon die Kreidefelsen von Dover zu sehen. Wie so hektische Touristen haben wir alles fotografiert, was durch die vom Nieselregen dreckigen Scheiben der F\u00e4hre irgendwie zu erkennen war. Kunstst\u00fcck, ich glaube der Bauch des Schiffes war h\u00f6chstens zu einem Viertel gef\u00fcllt. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.andreas-edler.de\/blog\/urlaub\/england-1998-suedkueste\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vor 26 Jahren waren wir schon einmal in England<\/a> und ich konnte mich erinnern, dass ich das mit dem Linksverkehr gar nicht so schlimm fand. Kommt man von der F\u00e4hre runter, dann gibt es sowieso nicht so viele M\u00f6glichkeiten. Es schl\u00e4ngelt sich so durch den Hafen und irgendwann gelangt man in einer der unvermeidlichen Kreisel, wird dabei aber gut gef\u00fchrt. Easy Peasy. Ab dann ist es anfangs etwas Konzentration, geht aber recht fix. Den Weg bis nach Birmingham haben wir sowieso nur auf Schnellstra\u00dfen bzw. Da scheint einfach alles aus dem Fenster geworfen zu werden. Ich fand das richtig schlimm, wie da das Plastik neben der Autobahn rumlag. Auch die Menge an geplatzten LKW-Reifen, die augenscheinlich niemand wegr\u00e4umt, hat mich sehr erstaunt. Alle Nase lang finden sich die schwarzen Gummis. Und havarierte Autos gibt es auf der Strecke nach Kroatien auch nicht so viele zu bestaunen. An diesem Tag haben wir in Deutschland, Holland, Belgien und Frankreich genau gar keins gesehen. In England auf der Strecke von Dover nach Birmingham mindestens vier. Ich habe dann auch meine t\u00e4glichen Tabletten und eine Sumatriptan eingeworfen, weil der Kopf immer noch nicht wollte und die Schmerzen immer unangenehmer wurden. Endspurt, Birmingham wir kommen. Wobei &#8222;Spurt&#8220; auf den vierspurigen Autobahnen echt \u00fcbertrieben ist. Knapp 120 km\/h darf man fahren und die allermeisten halten sich auch daran. Trotzdem war es einigen Hei\u00dfspornen zu langsam und die sind dann im Zick-Zack \u00fcber die Bahn gerauscht und haben munter links und rechts \u00fcberholt. Wir sind aber sch\u00f6n stoisch gefahren ruhig gefahren &#8211; auch wenn ich ab und zu mal einen LKW \u00fcberholt habe.<\/p>\n<p>Ziemlich genau um 15 Uhr rollten wir auf den Parkplatz am Premier-Inn Aston in Birmingham. F\u00fcnf Minuten vorher hatten wir dem Studenten getextet, dass wir nun da sind und als wir gerade die T\u00fcren \u00f6ffneten, stiefelte er schon im die Ecke :-) Hatte an einem Kanal hinter dem Hotel in der Sonne bereits gewartet! War das eine Freude. Besonders bei den beiden Br\u00fcdern. Der kleine ist freudig jubelnd auf den Gro\u00dfen zugest\u00fcrmt und dann musste sich erstmal gedr\u00fcckt werden. Es stand aber immer jemand an der Rezeption und sobald man ein wenig z\u00f6gerte oder fragend auf den Bildschirm schaute, kam sofort Unterst\u00fctzung. Ich fand das ganz OK. Unser Zimmer ist im 1. Stock hinten zu einem der Kan\u00e4le hin. Schick und modern eingerichtet, das Bad ausreichend gro\u00df, allerdings mit einer Badewanne, die auch als Dusche genutzt werden muss. Und die Dusche hat nur so einen Regenduschkopf, der fest montiert ist. Das mag ich nicht so. Aber jammern auf hohem Niveau. Rechts und links neben dem Doppelbett gibt es sogar extra USB-Ladebuchsen. Halleluja, wir sind im Jetzt angekommen :-) Im Zimmer sind ausreichend Steckdosen und ich habe mir vorher Adapter besorgt. Nat\u00fcrlich ist der Gro\u00dfe mit hoch gekommen. Ich bin einmal unter die Dusche gestiegen und danach ging es zwar nicht richtig gut, aber etwas besser. Wir wollten nat\u00fcrlich unbedingt noch die Studentenbude begutachten! Sind wir auch kurz gewesen und Alex und ich meinen, dass es da noch gut zwei Monate auszuhalten ist. Anschlie\u00dfend wurden wir Richtung Innenstadt von Birmingham gef\u00fchrt. Tim meinte vorher des\u00f6fteren, die Stadt sei nicht besonders sch\u00f6n, aber der Weg entlang der Kan\u00e4le und auch die Parks durch welche wir kamen, fand ich ganz nett. Allerdings beteuerte unser Student auch, er h\u00e4tte ja versprochen uns nur die sch\u00f6nen Ecken zu zeigen. Gegen 17:30 Uhr bekamen wir dann doch Hunger und haben das &#8222;<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/qu42XqdA3tXbGux37\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Purecraft Bar &#038; Kitchen<\/a>&#8220; als geeignet angesehen, den Mangel zu beheben. War eine angenehme Kneipe mit Restaurant. Das Essen war lecker, die Bedienung freundlich &#8211; die Preise allerdings &#8230; HolladieWaldfee! F\u00fcr uns vier habe ich fast 110 Euro gezahlt. Drei nicht \u00fcberm\u00e4\u00dfig gro\u00dfe Burger mit etwas Pommes und ein Sandwich mit Pommes, dazu Getr\u00e4nke. Um 21 Uhr waren wir wieder auf unserem Zimmer. Ben hatte sich das Steamdeck von seinem Bruder geliehen und hat noch etwas gedaddelt, ich bin mit diesem Text angefangen und Alex lag im Bett und hat gelesen. Kurz, dann ist sie nat\u00fcrlich sofort eingeschlafen. Habe mir dann noch ein Buch auf den Kindle geladen und mich auch ins Bett gelegt. Nach ein paar Seiten wurden mir die Lieder aber auch schwer. Ben war ebenfalls schon eingeschlafen und ich habe auch die Augen zu gemacht.<\/p>\n<h3>13.10.2024<\/h3>\n<p>Wir haben lange geschlafen, jedenfalls so gut es ging. Ich finde die Matratze im Bett deutlich zu weich, das Kissen zu gro\u00df und die kleine Klimaanlage pl\u00e4tschert in der Nacht phasenweise vor sich hin. Und ich hatte immer noch Kopfschmerzen. Eine weitere Sumatriptan wollte ich aber nicht nehmen, mir sind die Tabletten in der Menge auch nicht geheuer. Um kurz vor 9 sollte der gro\u00dfe Nachwuchs r\u00fcber kommen, damit wir zusammen fr\u00fchst\u00fccken k\u00f6nnen. P\u00fcnktlich klopfte es an unserer Zimmert\u00fcr! F\u00fcr den Gro\u00dfen haben wir zus\u00e4tzlich noch mal ca. 10 \u00a3 bezahlt. Wie schon erw\u00e4hnt, g\u00fcnstig ist hier gar nichts. Auf den Teller kann man sich alles packen, was man in England so erwartet. Au\u00dfer Scheibenk\u00e4se, Wurst, Kochschinken, Fisch oder sonst etwas, dass man irgendwoanders erwarten w\u00fcrde. Daf\u00fcr gibt es W\u00fcrstchen, gebratenen Speck, Spiegeleier, R\u00fchrei, gebratene Pilze, gebackene Bohnen, Butter und Marmelade. Und verschiedene M\u00fcslis. Alles sehr lecker. Br\u00f6tchen sucht man vergebens, &#8222;normales&#8220; Brot auch &#8211; nur Toastbrot steht bereit. Schmeckte alles sehr gut und es war reichlich vorhanden. Von halb 11 bis 12 haben wir nur auf dem Zimmer gechillt und uns etwas erz\u00e4hlt. Geplant hatten wir, gegen Mittag zum <a href=\"http:\/\/https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/vEHxGkQepCtDnAwC7\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Thinktank im Birmingham Science Museum<\/a> zu gehen und dort ein paar Stunden zu verbringen. Das Wetter war etwas k\u00fchler als am Vortag &#8211; Mitte Oktober halt. Tim hat nur eine etwas dickere Lederjacke mit nach England genommen, die im R\u00fccken zudem auch noch sehr kurz war. Ich hatte mir in der letzten Woche eine neue gef\u00fctterte Regenjacke von Mayer Sports gekauft, die ich im Nachinein ein bisschen gro\u00df fand. Der Gro\u00dfe hatte ohne Bedenkzeit nichts dagegen, dass ich ihm die vermache und er die n\u00e4chsten zwei Monate eine &#8222;richtige&#8220; Herbst-\/Winterjacke hat. Grunds\u00e4tzlich sieht die Stadt ganz gut aus, allerdings f\u00e4llt schon auf, dass der Unterhaltungszustand teilweise erb\u00e4rmlich ist. Es liegt \u00fcberall M\u00fcll rum, alles \u00fcberwuchert und teilweise sieht man Verfall. Ab der Birmingham University wurde das besser. Auf drei Etagen wird ein \u00dcberblick \u00fcber Technik und Entwicklung (speziell mit Schwerpunkt auf Birmingham) gegeben. F\u00fcr die \u00e4lteren unter uns waren die Etage 1 und 2 am interessantesten, der J\u00fcngste fand Etage drei mit den Zukunftsthemen und den Au\u00dfenbereich mit physikalischen Experimenten am tollsten.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nDas Personal war durchweg freundlich und hilfsbereit, die sanit\u00e4ren Anlagen sind gut und reichlich vorhanden und im kleinen Shop haben wir ein paar Andenken gekauft. Im Park vor dem Museum sprang der kleine Junge pl\u00f6tzlich zur Seite und kramte auf dem Boden rum. Dann kam er freudestrahlend mit einer Kugel zur\u00fcck. Im Museums-Shop hatte er so eine &#8222;<a href=\"https:\/\/deutsch.wikibrief.org\/wiki\/Hoberman_sphere\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hobermann Kugel<\/a>&#8220; mehrfach in der Hand. Ich wollte aber nicht das viele Geld f\u00fcr so wenig Plastik ausgeben. Nun hat er sie gefunden. Wir haben ein paar Minuten geschaut, ob wir ein suchendes Kind sahen und sind auch einige Schritte zur\u00fcck gegangen, fanden aber niemanden. Zuerst waren wir im &#8222;<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/5KjgivYJwbzxHyzdA\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sack of Potatoes<\/a>&#8222;, in dem es aber auf einen Sonntag nur eine eingeschr\u00e4nkte Men\u00fckarte gibt und diese leider nicht den vom J\u00fcngsten gew\u00fcnschten Burger aufwies. Also einmal die Stra\u00dfenseite gewechselt und r\u00fcber ins &#8222;<a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/BWVaNskGFy7ghyKs7\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Costa Green<\/a>&#8222;. Wie im Sack of Potatoes lief dort Fu\u00dfball, Finnland gegen England. Im Costa Green allerdings auf mindestens zwei Beamerleinw\u00e4nden, etlichen riesigen Fernsehern und kleineren TV, die auf den Tischen in Nischen standen. Das Costa Green lag auf dem Weg und wir sind kurzntschlossen eingekehrt. Die Speisen am Tisch haben wir \u00fcber eine App bestellt, die wir erst installieren mussten. Die Auswahl der Gerichte und Getr\u00e4nke fand ich nervig. Die Bestellung war dann aber sehr schnell Tisch und es war geschmacklich einwandfrei.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nDie Einrichtung ist bequem und \u00fcbersichtlich, man kann Dart und Billard spielen und auf reichlich vorhandenen Monitoren Sport schauen. Preislich war es wie in England \u00fcblich. Ich habe versucht den Fernseher an der Wand mit dem Laptop zu verbinden, aber die Funkstrecke wollte irgendwie nicht. Zwischendurch hat sich der Gro\u00dfe verabschiedet, weil er wieder zur\u00fcck ins Studentenwohnheim wollte. Morgen muss er fr\u00fch raus und studieren! Irgendwann habe ich gefunden, dass es nicht reicht, wenn der Rechner eine drahtlose Anzeige findet, dass Feature muss zus\u00e4tzlich auch nachtr\u00e4glich installiert sein. Und dann klappt es immer noch nicht, wenn man per VPN mit der heimischen Fritzbox verbunden ist. Nachdem das aber alles erkannt war, wurde auch der Fernseher als zweite Anzeige erkannt und wir konnten Filme streamen! Feierabend.<\/p>\n<h3>14.10.2024<\/h3>\n<p>Alex war gestern nachmittag schon st\u00e4ndig am Husten und das wurde in der Nacht nicht besser. Hat mich aber nicht so sehr gest\u00f6rt, wie meine verstopfte Nase und die kopfschmerzen. Habe irgendwann in der Nacht eine Paracetamol genommen, die aber irgendwie gar nichts gebracht hat. Wenigstens hatten wir f\u00fcr heute nichts geplant. Wir wollten nur im Hotelzimmer bleiben und vor uns hin gammeln. Stadturlaub hin oder her. Zur\u00fcck auf dem Zimmer gab es Hustenbonbons und ich habe den Laptop mit dem Fernseher gekoppelt, um &#8222;Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.&#8220; zu streamen. Das haben wir dann auch ausdauernd geschaut. Paralell habe ich diesen Text geschrieben, weil ich nicht mehr auf dem Bett liegen konnte. Nachmittags gab&#8217;s dann doch eine Sumatriptan, die ganz langsam auch wirkte. Diesmal aber ohne das irgendwie beruhigende Kribbeln in den Beinen bis hoch in den Kopf. Ich f\u00fchlte mich nur matschiger, aber daf\u00fcr ohne Stechen und Brennen hinter der Schl\u00e4fe. Wenigstens etwas. Der hat uns dann noch ein bisschen in Birmingham rumgef\u00fchrt, wo es entgegen seiner Beteurungen doch ein paar h\u00fcbsche Stellen gibt. Trotzdem es leicht nieselig war, fand ich den Spaziergang ganz angenehm. Kalt war&#8217;s n\u00e4mlich nicht. Das Zwischenziel war die Bibliothek in der Innenstadt, welche einen beeindruckenden Rundblick \u00fcber die Stadt bietet. Zumindest, wenn man sich denn traut das oben in die Runde zu schauen. Mir haben die Fahrst\u00fchle im Technikmuseum schon gereicht, da in der Library bis in den siebten Stock zu fahren, war schon schwierig. Alex, Tim und Ben sind einmal in die Runde und haben die Skyline genossen. Ich bin rein und habe mich an eine Wand gedr\u00fcckt. Jeder so, wie er es am besten aush\u00e4lt. Der Laden war ziemlich gro\u00df, aber nur \u00fcberschaubar gef\u00fcllt. Es dauerte trotzdem einen kleinen Moment, bis wir zu einem Tisch am Fenster gef\u00fchrt wurden. Die Einrichtung ist \u00fcbers\u00e4t mit Portraits allerlei Pers\u00f6nlichkeiten und ein bisschen auf &#8222;gem\u00fctlich&#8220; gemacht. Aufgrund der Gr\u00f6\u00dfe und der Lauts\u00e4rke, welche die wenigen G\u00e4ste erzeugte, kam diese Gef\u00fchl bei mir allerdings nicht auf. Die Bedienung war freundlich, hilfsbereit und alles kam z\u00fcgig an den Tisch. Zuerst eine Karaffe Wasser, die offensichtlich zum Service geh\u00f6rte. Die Burger von Ben und mir waren lecker, aber die Portionen &#8211; wie eigentlich alle in England bisher &#8211; eher klein. Alex hatte einen Hauch von Fisch auf dem Boden ihres Tellers und Tim einzeln abz\u00e4hlbare Nudeln. Allerdings wohl alles sehr schmackhaft. Preislich lagen wir f\u00fcr uns vier wieder um die 100 Euro. England ist ein teures Pflaster und bei aller Freundlichkeit finde ich die aufgerufenen Preise der gebotenen Leistung einfach nicht mehr angemessen. Den Studenten an seiner Wohnung abgesetzt und dann die letzen 800 Meter zu unserem Bett gehen. Ich bin sofort an den Laptop gegangen und habe die Dwonloadseite f\u00fcr mein Amundsen-Radio im Yeti gesucht. Das hatte n\u00e4mlich keine Karten f\u00fcr England drauf &#8211; vorher einfach nicht dran gedacht. Der Download der 9GB ging \u00fcber das Hotel-WLAN halbwegs fl\u00fcssig. Nur 3 1\/2 Stunden waren avisiert. Parallel dazu haben wir noch zwei Folgen &#8222;Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.&#8220; geschaut und dann das Licht ausgemacht! Downloadbalken muss man nicht ansehen. Da ich sowieso in der Nacht wach werde, war der Plan, dann das entpacken des ZIP anzusto\u00dfen. Eigentlich wollten wir so richtig fr\u00fch auf die Piste gehen, weil wir einen Trip quer durch England &#8211; naja, die H\u00e4lfte &#8211; vorhatten. Aber wie es so ist, haben wir rumgedr\u00f6mmelt. Ich habe die entpackten Navigationsdaten auf die SD-Karte aus dem Navi kopiert und als Tim dann tats\u00e4chlich recht fr\u00fch an die Zimmert\u00fcr klopfte, haben wir vor 8 Uhr gefr\u00fchst\u00fcckt. Da ging es meinem Kopf langsam besser. Aber vom Hof sind wir trotzdem erst gegen halb 9 Uhr gekommen. Der Weg ging grob Richtung Westen. Ich hatte zwei Ziele ausgeguckt, die den anderen auch genehm waren. So richtig mit Bilder gucken im Vorfeld nicht, nur von oben in Google Maps reingezoomt und geschaut, was wo lag. In einem kleinen Andenkenladen bezahlt man den Eintritt beim freundlichen und gut gelaunten Personal und sollte sich unbedingt \u00fcberreden lassen, die kleinen elektronischen Reisef\u00fchrer zu buchen. Die k\u00f6nnen die Texte auch in deutsch aufsagen. Alex und ich haben davon Gebrauch gemacht. Neben kleinen Kunstoff- und echten Schwertern gab es auch Ritterhelme f\u00fcr Kinder, Spirituosen und andere Kleinigkeiten zu erwerben. Der Rundgang durch den sehr sch\u00f6n renvierten bzw. im Originalzustand belassenen Gutshof dauerte gut 1 1\/2 Stunden und ich fand ihn dank des F\u00fchrers sehr interessant! Als wir gekommen sind, schien unser Auto das einzige auf dem Parkplatz zu sein. Als wir fuhren, standen sicher ein Dutzend Autos in Reihe. Mit dem sind wir dann auf die Strecke nach Aberystwyth gefahren. Ein kleiner Ort an der Westk\u00fcste Gro\u00dfbritanniens in Wales. Noch nie was von geh\u00f6rt und nur ausgesucht, weil ich auf Maps den Ort &#8222;Railroadstation on the cliffs&#8220; gesehen hatte. Und weil es die n\u00e4chste K\u00fcste war, die wir erreichen konnten. Unterwegs sah Tim, der vorne den Beifahrer machte, eine Stra\u00dfe welche seitlich in die H\u00fcgel f\u00fchrte. Vorher hatte ich schon moniert, dass man augenscheinlich nirgends zu einem Aussichtspunkt geleitet wurde. Also sind wir kurzentschlossen in die schmale Gasse eingebogen und fuhren auf verschlungenen Wegen hoch in die walisischen &#8222;Berge&#8220;. Zwischen zwei H\u00fcgeln haben wir den Wagen geparkt und die beiden Jungs sind weiter hoch gekraxelt. Ich bin raus und etwas rumgelaufen. Nur Alex hatte Sch\u00fcttelfrost, fror wie ein Schneider und sa\u00df eingepackt im Auto. Die Tante im Navi hat sich gar nicht die M\u00fche gemacht, diese auszusprechen. Knapp 3 1\/2 Stunden reine Autofahrt ab Birmingham ben\u00f6tigten wir, bis wir in Aberystwyth auf einen Parkplatz gerollt sind. Alex musste teilweise ein bisschen gezogen werden, weil sie echt v\u00f6llig groggy war. Fast oben angekommen meinte Tim an einer Stelle, dass es dort aber ganz sch\u00f6n steil runter gehen w\u00fcrde und der kleine Bruder musste es ihm dann nat\u00fcrlich nachmachen und stand pl\u00f6tzlich am Rand der Klippe mit den Zehen schon \u00fcber dem Abgrund. Als ich das gesehen habe, war es vorbei. Ich habe nur &#8222;Ben, Ben&#8220; geschrien, hatte Schwei\u00dfausbr\u00fcche, mir schossen die Tr\u00e4nen in die Augen und der Tag war gelaufen. Ich glaube nicht, dass sich jemand vorstellen kann, wie es ist richtig Panik zu bekommen. Auch kluge Spr\u00fcche wie &#8222;Die Lufthansa bietet ganz tolle Kurse gegen H\u00f6henangst an!&#8220; helfen wirklich nicht weiter. Aber es ist wie es ist. Nach einiger Zeit sind wir wieder runter, haben uns noch die Seebr\u00fccke &#8211; die erste, die je in Wales gebaut wurde! &#8211; angeschaut und sind zur alten Burgruine gegangen. Die Stadt ist dort an der K\u00fcste wirklich sch\u00f6n gelegen. Es war nicht sonderlich kalt, es regnete nicht. Nur Alex war krank und ich konnte mich nicht beruhigen. Wirklich ein sch\u00f6ner Ausflug! Ich hatte mich schon zu Hause auf &#8222;Fish &#038; Chips&#8220; an der K\u00fcste im Seewind gefreut, aber als die beiden Jungs das dann auf dem R\u00fcckweg zum Auto an einer kleinen Bude anhielten und sich jeder eine T\u00fcte gekauft haben, war ich einfach nicht in der Stimmung. Recht wortlos sind wir alle eingestiegen und haben uns auf den Heimweg gemacht. Der kleine Junge hatte ein schlechtes Gewissen, weil er sich so nah an den Abgrund gestellt hatte. Das \u00e4nderte aber erstmal nichts. Der Weg f\u00fchrte uns auf dem ersten Viertel genau auf der Strecke, die wir schon f\u00fcr die Hinfahrt genutzt haben. Kurvig, schmal, bergauf und bergab. Und die Engl\u00e4nder sind nicht zimperlich. Ich habe auf der ganzen Fahrt dreimal die Geschichte mit dem Linksverkehr nicht komplett verinnerlicht. Einmal bin ich auf der falschen Seite einer Verkehrsinsel abgebogen und zweimal in einer schmalen Stra\u00dfe eher rechts als links gefahren. Eigentlich dachte ich, dass ich z\u00fcgig unterwegs sei, aber auf der Hinfahrt haben LKW schon gedr\u00e4ngelt. Im dunklen \u00fcberholte uns auf einer etwas l\u00e4ngeren Geraden vor einer Kurve dann ein Mini und als ich versuchte an dem dran zu bleiben, ist das nicht gelungen. Fahren die mit Radar oder haben Nachtsichtbrillen? Verdammte Axt, das habe ich mich einfach nicht getraut. Na prima, da kommt ja heute alles zusammen, was es f\u00fcr gute Laune braucht. Kopfschmerzen, Panik, Auto kaputt und die Frau krank. Ausgezeichnet. Es schlackerte aber nichts in der Lenkung, der Wagen fuhr weiter stoisch geradeaus, die Luft schien das Gummi nicht zu verlassen. Schien gut gegangen zu sein. Um 19 Uhr rum haben wir an einer Autobahnservicestation getankt und ich habe mir das Malheur angesehen. Konnte aber bei dem Dreck auf den Felgen nicht mal Kratzer entdecken. Man sah die Stelle, an der es Kontakt gab, aber so ungewaschen ist es nicht dramatisch. Also weiter. Eine Stunde danach sind wir in Birmingham auf den Parkplatz des Premium Inn gerollt. Da ich seit dem ausufernden Fr\u00fchst\u00fcck auch noch nichts gegessen habe, sind wir dann runter ins Hotelrestaurant und haben beide einen Burger mit Pommes verspeist und uns noch was vom Tag erz\u00e4hlt. Die Burger waren sehr lecker und preislich das G\u00fcnstigste, was wir an &#8222;richtigem Essen&#8220; in England bisher gekauft hatten. Echt gut.<\/p>\n<p>Als wir eine Stunde sp\u00e4ter wieder ins Zimmer kamen, lag Alex im Bett, hatte das Wasser aber noch in der Wanne gelassen und Ben hat das freudig genutzt, bevor er sich auf sein Bett gelegt hat und quasi sofort einschlie\u00df. Anstrengender und \u00fcberwiegend sch\u00f6ner Tag.<\/p>\n<h3>16.10.2024<\/h3>\n<p>Gegen 9 Uhr ist der Gro\u00dfe aus dem nahe gelegenen Studentenwohnheim r\u00fcber gekommen, um mit uns hier zu fr\u00fchst\u00fccken. Bis auf den Montag, an dem er fr\u00fch in die Uni musste, um an seinen Kursen teilzunehmen, haben wir das jeden Tag so gemacht. Das Essen kostet 11 Euro und daf\u00fcr k\u00f6nnen wir soviel verputzen, wie wir wollen. Nach den ersten Tagen ist das aber zumindest bei mir auch weniger geworden. Wenn wir zu Hause sind, werden wir uns garantiert erstmal richtige Br\u00f6tchen kaufen oder eine Scheibe Brot essen. Und etwas K\u00e4se! Ihr ging es nun schon den dritten Tag in Folge richtig mies. Fr\u00f6steln, schwitzen, husten und fiese Schmerzen beim Husten. Auf der Liste der anzuschauenden Objekte stand eh nur noch das Legoland in Birmingham. Da sind beide Br\u00fcder nicht abgeneigt und daher wurde es das Tagesziel. Den Weg konnte man komplett an einem der vielen Birmingh\u00e4mmer Kan\u00e4le entlanglaufen. Wir haben die beiden Jungs eine Viertelstunde begleitet und Alex ist dann umgekehrt, weil es zu anstrengend wurde. Da ich eh nicht so versessen auf Baukl\u00f6tze bin und Alex ziemlich klapperig aussah, bin ich mit zur\u00fcck gegangen. Auch wenn dies seit letztem Donnerstag der erste Tag war, an dem ich nicht in der Nacht schon Kopfschmerzen hatte. Wir haben nur auf dem Zimmer gelegen. Alex hustete sich die Seele aus dem Leib und ich habe hier geschrieben, Bilder sortiert und zum Schlu\u00df auch noch die F\u00e4hre f\u00fcr die Heimfahrt am Freitagmorgen gebucht. Am Donnerstag m\u00fcssen wir das Zimmer r\u00e4umen, wir wollen aber auch noch an die andere Seite von England und fahren daher erst am n\u00e4chsten Tag. Tim nehmen wir mit und \u00fcbernachten dann in Harwich in der N\u00e4he des Terminals der Stena-Line. Es wird n\u00e4mlich nicht Dover -> Calais, sondern Harwich -> Hoek van Holland. Die Fahrt dauert gut vier mal so lange, danach ist die Autofahrt aber k\u00fcrzer. Und g\u00fcnstiger als die kurze F\u00e4hrverbindung war es auch noch. Alex hatte derweil schon ein paar Klamotten in die Reisetaschen verstaut, ich habe nach dem Fr\u00fchst\u00fcck auf den Yeti geguckt, ob links vorne noch Luft drauf war und entdeckt, dass man mit der Klimaanlage die Temperatur im Hotelzimmer senken kann. Leider gibt es keine offensichtliche M\u00f6glichkeit, einfach die Heizung runter zu drehen. Uns kommt es allen extrem warm vor. Liegt vielleicht auch am Wetter, welches in dieser Woche wesentlich besser als erwartet und angek\u00fcndigt war. Es sollte eigentlich drei Tage dauernd regnen, habe aber nur an zwei Tagen etwas genieselt. Tim hatte einen Asiaten in der N\u00e4he ausgemacht, der sich dann aber nach einem Spaziergang dorthin als wenig einladender Uber-Eats-Lieferservice entpuppte. Wieder in die Stadt laufen wollten wir alle nicht und sind daher zur\u00fcck ins Premier Inn, wo Ben und ich am Vortag schon gut gegessen hatten. Ich bestellte dort meine Fish and Chips, Alex ein H\u00fchnchen Curry, Tim ein &#8222;Beef &#038; Ale&#8220;-Pie und Ben den Cheese Burger, der ihm gestern schon schmeckte. Das alles als &#8222;Meal Deal&#8220; mit einem Nachtisch. Was soll ich sagen: das war das g\u00fcnstigste und beste Essen im Urlaub bisher! Die Freundin hatte gestern angeregt, doch mal etwas fr\u00fcher zu telefonieren ;-) Wir haben im Bett zwei Folgen &#8222;Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.&#8220; geschaut (Mir scheint, ich habe Staffel 6 und 7 bisher noch gar nicht gesehen!) und dann das Licht ausgemacht. Die Nacht war anstrengend, weil Alex st\u00e4ndig husten musste, aber irgendwann habe ich auch die Augen zu gemacht.<\/p>\n<h3>17.10.2024 &#8211; letzter kompletter Tag in England<\/h3>\n<p>Um kurz vor 8 wurde ich von meinem Handy aus dem Halbschlaf gerissen. Eigentlich war ich schon wach und habe an dem Bericht hier geschrieben, aber die beiden anderen im Zimmer schliefen noch. Am anderen Ende war meine Tante, die uns mitteilen wollte, dass sie sich die geschickten Bilder angesehen hat und uns einen sch\u00f6nen Tag w\u00fcnschen wollte. Vielen Dank! Mein kleiner Hinweis auf die Zeitverschiebung hat sie zum schnellen Auflegen veranlasst. Aber in einer Stunde steht sowieso der Student vor der T\u00fcr. Also habe ich mich langsam fertig gemacht. Alex war am Husten und R\u00f6cheln, mein Kopf irgendwie immer noch matschig, wenngleich ohne fieses Stechen, nur Ben schien es wirklich gut zu gehen. Irgendwann klopfte es dann an der Zimmert\u00fcr und wir waren wieder zu viert. Noch ein bisschen Klamotten gepackt und dann runter zum letzten &#8222;International Breakfast&#8220;. Da wir gestern den &#8222;Meal Deal&#8220; gemacht hatten, war das f\u00fcr den Studenten auch mit drin. Ich stelle mich nach dieser Woche erstmal nicht auf die Waage, aber bei den Mengen an W\u00fcrstchen, gebratenem Schinken und Ei, welche ich immer verputzt habe, kann ich das Gewicht nicht gehalten haben. Das Ziel war Harwich und Zwischenziele wollten wir unterwegs entscheiden. Ich muss \u00fcbrigens wohl leider das Amundsen-Navi im Auto tauschen. Das hat im Sommerurlaub schon rumgemuckt, ab und zu wild die Bildschirme gewechselt und an einigen Stellen reagierte der Touchscreen nicht mehr. In dieser Woche ist das deutlich schlimmer geworden. Bis hin zur Unbenutzbarkeit. Da muss ich wohl t\u00e4tig werden. Wir sind jedenfalls ganz gut auf die Autobahn gekommen und grob Richtung S\u00fcdosten aus Birmingham raus gefahren. Alex hatte hinter Cambridge einen &#8222;Garten&#8220; oder besser Park als Sehensw\u00fcrdigkeit ausgemacht und den haben wir angesteuert. Sch\u00f6n angelegt, sauber und f\u00fcr Kinder bis 14 Jahren. Was allerdings den Gro\u00dfen nicht davon abhielt, auch einige der Ger\u00e4te auszuprobieren. Als wir dort angelangten und uns die Kirche von au\u00dfen ansahen, wurden wir von einem \u00e4lteren P\u00e4rchen angesprochen, welche uns sehr nett einiges \u00fcber die Stadt erz\u00e4hlten und uns einluden, das Geb\u00e4ude von innen zu besichtigen. Die Gr\u00f6\u00dfe des Innenraums und der Fenster sind f\u00fcr diese kleine Stadt erstaunlich. Ein sch\u00f6nes St\u00e4dchen mit vielen sch\u00f6n angelegten und gepflegten Parks. Je kleiner und l\u00e4ndlicher St\u00e4dte sind, desto sauberer ist es auch. Birmingham war an vielen von uns besuchten Ecken schlicht ein Drecksloch. \u00dcberall lag M\u00fcll rum. Auch die R\u00e4nder der Autobahnen sind gruselig. Wer denkt bei uns w\u00e4re es schon schlimm, der will die Rabatten in England nicht sehen. Eine Stunde und 15 Minuten sa\u00dfen wir danach noch im Yeti auf Englands Stra\u00dfen, bis wir kurz vor Harwich links nach Parkeston abbogen. Dort hatte ich ebenfalls am Vortag zwei Zimmer im &#8222;Tulip Hotel Harwich&#8220; gebucht hatte. Das in der N\u00e4he gelegene &#8222;Premier Inn&#8220; war ausverkauft. Auf den Bildern machte das Etablissement von au\u00dfen keinen guten Eindruck und auch die Gegend erschien mir wenig vertrauenerweckend. An der mit Rezeption gekennzeichneten T\u00fcr haben wir den vorab per Mail erhaltenen Code ausprobiert und konnten eintreten. Dort wurden wir von einer netten Dame empfangen, die allerdings noch schlechter Englisch sprach als ich. Dem Akzent nach eine Italienerin. Unsere Buchung konnte sie in dem 32-Zoll-Apple-Mac nicht finden, weil ihr das Passwort augenscheinlich nicht bekannt war. Sie schnappte sich dann aber zwei Zimmerschl\u00fcssel und bat uns ihr zu folgen, sie w\u00fcrde uns jeweils zwei Familienzimmer zur Auswahl zeigen. Das erste fand ich ehrlich gesagt schon v\u00f6llig OK, aber sie wollte noch ein zweites pr\u00e4sentieren. Dazu gingen wir wieder raus und in einen Hinterhof, wo dann das &#8222;Cottage 2&#8220; stand, ein eigenes Minihaus, dessen T\u00fcr mit einem Schraubenzieher offen gehalten wurde. Den Grund bemerkte ich, als ich das T\u00fcrblatt anfasste, um die T\u00fcr ganz zu \u00f6ffnen. Sie war frisch gestrichen und meine Finger ziemlich wei\u00df. Die Abdr\u00fccke werden sp\u00e4tere Generationen noch verwenden k\u00f6nnen :-)<br \/>\n<br \/>\nIm Erdgeschoss war ein Zimmer mit zwei Einzelbetten f\u00fcr die Jungs &#8211; inkl. einem 55 Zoll Smart-TV an der Wand, sowie eine kleine K\u00fcche und ein kleines Bad. \u00dcber eine schmale Treppe gelangten wir in ein gro\u00dfes Dachgeschoss mit einem queensize Bett und einem 43 Zoll TV an der Wand. Alles frisch renoviert und sehr schick (die Gr\u00f6\u00dfe der Fernseher wurden uns sp\u00e4ter beim Versuch Filme zu streamen angezeigt). Ein weiteres Bad versteckte sich hinter ein fast unsichtbaren T\u00fcr in der stylish holzverkleideten Wand. Mit so einer Einrichtung hatte ich \u00fcberhaupt nicht gerechnet. &#8222;Ob uns das so gef\u00e4llt?&#8220; &#8211; Klar, auf jeden Fall, das nehmen wir. Die Eingangst\u00fcren und den Hinterhof konnten wir elektronisch per Zugangscode \u00f6ffnen. Das Auto stand versteckt in einer Parkbucht hinter dem Haus. Hat mir wirklich gut gefallen. Einziger Kritikpunkt war das etwas weiche Bett. Gut geschlafen habe ich sp\u00e4ter aber trotzdem. Zu Fu\u00df wollten wir die cier Kilometer bis zu den Leuchtt\u00fcrmen nicht gehen und parkten daher nach 5 Minuten das Auto hinter einem kleinen Deich. Man schaute von dort zwar &#8222;nur&#8220; auf den Hafen von Harwich, aber das so schon ganz beeindruckend aus. Wir wollten eigentlich bis zum Harwich Fort, aber das schien sowieso geschlossen zu sein und daher war das &#8222;Lower Lighthouse&#8220; der letzte besuchte Punkt. Bisschen Wind um die Nase und Meerluft schnuppern. Tim hat dann auf dem Handy nach einem Restaurant gesucht und wir sind im &#8222;The Crown Post&#8220; gelandet. Es sah sehr klein und eng aus und wirkte ein bisschen wie eine reine Kneipe. Als wir allerdings dann doch fragten, wurden wir nach hinten durch geschickt und die Treppe rauf, um in einem wirklich urig gem\u00fctlichen Gastraum zu landen, in dem auch bereits andere G\u00e4ste sa\u00dfen und speisten. Die sehr freundliche und hilfsbereite Dame des Hauses war ein wenig angeschlagen, gab aber ihr bestes, um uns schnell zu bedienen. Wir hatten drei Rumpsteak mit Pfeffersauce und f\u00fcr den J\u00fcngsten einen Burger. Alle waren wir wunderbar zufrieden, es schmeckte wirklich gut. Ich hatte mit meinem St\u00fcck Fleisch ein wenig viele Sehnen, aber die beiden anderen Steaks waren einwandfrei. Alex war v\u00f6llig fertig, hat sich nur noch ins Bett gelegt und vor sich hin gekeucht. Ich habe die schicke Dusche genutzt und mich hei\u00df abgebraust und dann noch ein bisschen die &#8222;Heute Show&#8220; und &#8222;ZDF Magazin Royal&#8220; der letzten Woche geschaut. Jedenfalls so lange, bis die beiden Jungs unten Spa\u00df mit den Smart-TV hatten und uns den Fernseher ausschalteten. Sehr lustig, Kinder. Hatte aber auch keine Lust, das Ger\u00e4te wieder anzumachen und die richtige Stelle auf Youtube zu suchen. Dann eben Feierabend. Bestimmt eine Stunde habe ich noch zugeh\u00f6rt, wie der Gro\u00dfe und der Kleine unten Spa\u00df hatten und rumalberten. In unserer Reservierung stand zwar nicht, dass wir eine Stunde vorher vor Ort sein sollten, aber nicht nur Alex war unruhig. Zudem hatte der Nachwuchs eine direkte Zugverbindung von Harwich nach Cambridge gefunden &#8211; die allerdings bereits um viertel vor 9 ging. Wie gut, dass der Bahnhof direkt neben dem F\u00e4hranleger ist. Wir sind also zeitig aufgestanden &#8211; Fr\u00fchst\u00fcck konnte man sowieso nicht buchen &#8211; haben den Wagen gepackt und uns auf den Weg gemacht. Dank des maroden Navis haben wir erst kurz wieder ein paar scharfe Worte im Auto gewechselt und eine kleine Ehrenrunde gedreht, bis wir auf dem Parkplatz vor dem von au\u00dfen nicht als solchem erkennbaren Bahnhof standen. Da flossen dann bei der Verabschiedung doch ein paar Tr\u00e4nchen, aber lange haben wir das nicht zugelassen. Tim musste noch sein Ticket abholen und wir wollten zum Check-In. Der war wie gesagt gleich um die Ecke und es lief hier bei Stena Lines genauso fluffig, wie auf der Hinfahrt bei P&#038;O Ferries. Danach war&#8217;s aber nur eine riesige Rampe durch den ge\u00f6ffneten Bug der F\u00e4hre in das Schiff hinein. Die Stena Brittanica war deutlich gr\u00f6\u00dfer, als die F\u00e4hre von Calais nach Dover, aber es schienen nicht wesentlich mehr Menschen an Bord zu sein. Auf der Hinfahrt haben wir bereits gedacht, dass sich so eine \u00dcberfahrt f\u00fcr die Reederei bei der geringen Anzahl an Passagieren doch gar nicht lohnen kann. Bei dieser deutlich l\u00e4ngeren Querung der Nordsee von Harwich nach Hoek van Holland kamen wir uns in der riesigen neunten Etage schon fast verloren vor. Hatte nat\u00fcrlich enorme Vorteile f\u00fcr uns! Der Fahrstuhl bewegte sich nicht. Und dann sah ich das Schild, welches mir bedeutete, dass die Parkebene aus Sicherheitsgr\u00fcnden w\u00e4hrend der Fahrt gesperrt ist. Meine Laune war schlagartig auf null und auch an der Info konnte man mir nur best\u00e4tigen, dass ich da wohl nicht hinkommen w\u00fcrde. Und die Steckdosen an Bord hatten alle auch USB-A-Ladebuchsen. Wenigstens mussten wir also nicht auf etwas Online-Zerstreuung verzichten! F\u00fcr Ben haben wir einen Internetzugang mit Streaming f\u00fcr 4 Euro gebucht, damit er versorgt ist. Der &#8222;normale&#8220; Zugang erm\u00f6glichte nur Messaging und Browsernutzung. Das war f\u00fcr uns aber OK. Wenngleich die Konnektivit\u00e4t zwischendurch ziemlich eingeschr\u00e4nkt war und teilweise gar nichts ging. Das ging nicht nur uns so. Gegessen haben wir nur ein kleines Baguette, wir hatten alle nicht so richtig Hunger. Ansonsten viel, viel aus dem Fenster auf&#8217;s Meer geschaut. Ich habe mich gewundert, wie viel dort los war! Ein Schiff nach dem N\u00e4chsten, es war richtig Verkehr da drau\u00dfen. Die Fahrt war mit 6 Stunden 45 Minuten angegeben und diese Zeit wurde fast genau eingehalten. Dazu noch eine Stunde die Uhr vorstellen, so dass wir um 20 Minuten nach 17 Uhr den Yeti wieder aus dem Frachtraum kutschierten und auf der rechten Seite der Stra\u00dfen Richtung Heimat rollten! Ziwschendurch hatte Alex einen Burger King bei Utrecht gefunden, an dem wir angehalten haben. Allerdings war uns allen die Schlange zum Anstehen viel zu lang, so dass wir nur die Toilette benutzten. Alle wollten nur noch nach Hause. Ein paar Baustellen und Staus haben wir bei Hengelo und Enschede umfahren und sind dann hinter Sch\u00fcttdorf wieder auf die A30 fuhren. Ab da ist es kein Hexenwerk mehr und es war nur noch Kilometer abspulen. Alex wollte nur noch ins Bett, weil sie v\u00f6llig schlapp war und Ben hatte sich eh schon zur Seite an die T\u00fcr gelehnt. Zwanzig Minuten vor 22 Uhr sind wir im D\u00f6rgen auf den Hof gerollt! Alle haben sich gefreut, dass wir uns gesehen und Zeit miteinander verbracht haben. Sechzig Tage muss der Gro\u00dfe noch in der Fremde ausharren, dann kommt er Mitte Dezember wieder nach Hause.
